The CEO of Embratel Carlos Henrique Moreira opened the ceremony of the VII Embratel Press Award, welcoming the finalists and more than 1,400 guests.

The story ?Child Abuse? by Delis Ortiz, Denise Sobrinho and Maurício Maia, from Globo TV (Globo Repórter show) was the outright winner of the 2005 Embratel Press Award, gaining the Barbosa Lima Sobrinho Grand Prix. The trophy was handed by the chairman of the Rio de Janeiro Professional Journalists Union Azis Filho.

Delis Ortiz was touched with the Barbosa Lima Sobrinho Grand Prix. She spoke with emotion about the topic of her prizewinning story, and received a standing ovation from the audience that crowded Canecão.


Winners of the regional categories

North Region
Ronaldo Brasiliense (O Liberal newspaper), for ?Sudam. Todos ricos, todos soltos!? (Sudam. All of them rich, all of them out of jail!) receiving the trophy from Ney Acyr, customer care director of Embratel.


Midwest Region
Ana Beatriz Magno (Correio Braziliense newspaper), for the story ?Filhos da mãe? (Mother?s children), receives the trophy from Nacif Elias, member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award and director of the Rio de Janeiro Professional Journalists Union.


Northeast Region
Beatriz Castro (Globo Nordeste TV), author of ?Trabalho infantile? (Child Labor) receives the trophy from the hands of Oscar Petersen Filho, legal director of Embratel.


South Region
Mauri König (Gazeta do Povo newspaper -PR) won the regional award for ?Adrianópolis sob o peso do passado? (The burden of the past on Adrianópolis) and received the trophy from Gilberto Pauletti, journalist and member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.


Southeast Region
Paulo Marqueiro and Selma Schmidt (O Globo newspaper) produced the prizewinning story ?Vida Severina: da miséria à realidade da favela? (Vida Severina: from extreme poverty to real life in the slums) and received the trophy from Cícero Sandroni, journalist, writer - member of the Brazilian Academy of Literature - and member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.


Winners of the national categories

Telecommunications Article (specialized media)
Ana Paula Lobo and Graça Sermoud (Frecuencia Latinoamérica magazine) produced the article ?Tempos modernos? (Modern Times) and received the trophy from Luiz Tito, executive director of regulatory affairs of Embratel.

Telecommunications Article (non specialized media)
Alexandre Mansur, Luciana Vicária and Henrique Fruet (Época magazine), for ?A nova geração conectada? (Connecting the new generation) receiving the trophy from Ivan Campagnolli Júnior, executive director of operations of Embratel.

Foreign Correspondent Article

Jens Glusing, correspondent of Germany ?s Der Spiegel magazine, won the prize for Wolke von geheimnissen (Suspicious Cloud) about the MSI millionaire investments in Corinthians soccer team. He received the trophy from Diana Kinch, chairman of the Foreign Correspondent Press Association.


Cultural Article
There was a draw in this category and the prize went to Vandeck Santiago (Diário de Pernambuco newspaper) for ?Josué de Castro - o gênio silenciado? (Josué de Castro ? the silenced genius), and to Gustavo Werneck, Lucas Figueiredo and Isabella Souto ( Estado de Minas newspaper) for ?Ouro de Minas - 300 anos de História? (Minas Gold ? 300 years of History ), who received the trophy from professor Arnaldo Niskier, Rio de Janeiro state secretary of culture and member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.

Sports Article
Roberto Salim and Ronaldo Kotscho (ESPM Brasil TV) for the series ?Programas Brasil futebol clube (Brasil futebol clube Programs), received the trophy from journalist and host Maurício Menezes, member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.

Radio Article
Cid Martins (Gaúcha Radio), author of ?Cidade Baixa - um território sem lei? (Cidade Baixa ? a lawless area), receives the trophy from journalist Antônio Cunha, member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.

Photographic Article
Carlos Moraes, photographer of O Dia newspaper in Rio de Janeiro, won the prize for the photographic article ?Execução no Morro da Providência? (Execution at Morro da Providência), receiving the trophy from Rogério Reis, photographer and member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.

Cinematographic Article
Record TV cinematographic reporter Eusébio Gomes, for the scenes of ?Agressão? (Attack) ? that caught soccer player Felipe hitting an opponent out of the sight of the referee ? won the prize in this new category, and received the trophy from Alberto Jacob, chairman of Arfoc and member of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.

Television Article
Leandro Cipoloni and Paulo Nicolau, of Record TV as well, won the prize in this category for ?Imbroglione ? o cidadão fantasma? (Imbroglione ? the ghost citizen) and reaceived the trophy from Sérgio Murilo, chairman of the National Journalists Federation (Fenaj).

Social Responsibility
Patrícia Trudes and Renato Essenfelder, authors of ?Oito objetivos do milênio? (Eight goals of the millennium), published in Folha de São Paulo newspaper, received the trophy from Guilherme Zattar, corporate communication executive director of Embratel.

Newspaper / Magazine (Free Topic)
Fábio Gusmão and the team of Extra newspaper in Rio de Janeiro, for ?Janela indiscreta? (Rear Window) - the story of ?Dona Vitória?, who for two years filmed the actions of drug dealers from the window of her apartment in Copacabana. They received the trophy from the hands of journalist Janice Caetano, vice chairman of the Rio de Janeiro Professional Journalists Union and chairman of the jury of the Embratel Press Award.

Investigative Article (Tim Lopes Trophy)
Paulo Marqueiro and Elenilce Bottari, from O Globo newspaper, were the authors of prizewinning article ?Órfãos da violência? (Orphans of violence) and received the Tim Lopes trophy from the hands of Tânia Lopes, sister of much-missed journalist Tim Lopes.

Special Moments

During the 2005 the Embratel Press Award gala evening, a special tribute was paid to the photographic reporters from all over the country, represented by four veteran professionals: Luis Pinto (recently deceased), Sebastião Marinho, Alberto Jacob and Alaor Barreto (deceased before the tribute and represented by his son Alaor Filho, a photographic reporter himself). They received the special trophies from the hands of their children, photographic professionals themselves. Alaor Filho received the tribute on behalf of his father from the hands of his daughter Fernanda Caetano.

All the prizewinners and honored participants in that evening posed for the historical photo of the VII Embratel Press Award.
