First transmission of the Olympic Games via HDTV in Brazil
Embratel is the major company responsible for the transmission of the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing (China). The telecommunications company is working with three international consortiums to provide full quality transmission of the greatest and most important sports event featurig athletes from nearly every country in the world fighting for medals in 32 Olympic sports.
Since last year Embratel has coordinated the game transmission project. During the planning phase, Embratel conducted tests to target the most suitable equipment and systems for the operation, fixed the logistics, defined and trained the technical team and lastly outlined the operational needs during the Games.
"Due to the wide coverage area, we have operated with three international consortiums that manage their own optical, terrestrial and submarine systems, in addition to the domestic providers and of Embratel?s own fiber optics network", explains Guilherme Zattar, executive director of Embratel. All systems have automatic redundancy.
Embratel's transmission includes TV signals in digital and conventional (SDTV) format, and in the new HDTV technology as well; voice signals for intercommunication systems; telephone signals for customers to use their phones and PABX systems as if they were in Brazil; data signals with an array of interfaces for LAN interconnections; VOIP systems, video streaming, access to the Internet, and much more.
"The active participation of Embratel in the Athens Olympic Games, in the Soccer World Cup in Germany , and in the Pan-American Games in Rio has improved its competence in the transmission of sports events", says Zattar.
Embratel will be offering a complete set of facilities for the voice and data transmission of radio and TV stations responsible for covering the Games, supported by a team of professionals responsible for managing the control, commercial support and operation areas. The Beijing team will operate in two phases. The first phase comprises the installation, assembly and test operations, the second phase comprises the implementation of the operatonal processes on a 24/7 basis.
The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, to take place on August 08 at 09 am, will be transmitted by Embratel.
