ISO 14001

ISO-14000 certification guarantees that the Environment Management System employed by the organization is consistent and is being practiced. ISO 14001

EMBRATEL obtains ISO 14001 certification in Fernando de Noronha

In October of 1999 Embratel obtained the certification of the Environmental Management program for its Fernando de Noronha satellite earth station. The certification was granted by Fundação Carlos Alberto Vanzolini and is in line with the Environmental Management policy set up by the company’s management: To provide Telecommunications services with the continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System: by preventing the ecosystem pollution, abiding by the environmental laws and regulations, and playing its share in life preservation.

This certification is the result of the effort of the employees and the community, which worked together for the success of the project. The program brought about a 20% cut of commercial power consumption in the island, and 100% cut of diesel oil consumption (1.000 liters/year) with the deactivation of the motor-generator groups. The program is supported by responsible actions like the production of clear energy, the utilization of a natural air-conditioning system using no air-conditioning equipment, the utilization of rainwater to water the 1,070 native seedlings planted there, the waste selective collection and the controlled disposal of materials. All such actions plus the history of the presence of Embratel in the Island are told through a set of photographic panels displayed at the Embratel Photographic Memorial installed on the site and open to the public.

Technical Action

Embratel started to operate in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago in 1972 with a HF (high frequency) transmission system. In 1982 the system was replaced by satellite and analog multiplex equipment, soon replaced by digital technology equipment. This gave rise to the provision of telephone, data communication, mobile maritime and flight protection circuits services.

Environmental Management

The production of clear energy comes from the use of solar panels and of an eolic turbine. The air conditioning equipment was replaced by an architectural project enabling the natural refrigeration produced by the wind, through a convection process. All this was developed in partnership with the Pernambuco Federal University. The system eliminated the utilization of diesel oil in the station. The control of waste disposal, of garbage selective collection, of a careful selection of partners to supply goods and services, the dissemination and consciousness campaigns stressing the importance of the environment preservation, in addition to the continuous knowledge of the applicable law, foster the improvement of management actions. Through 16 panels, the Embratel Photographic Memorial installed on the site and open to the public tells the history of the archipelago, of Embratel and of the Fernando de Noronha station’s environmental management program. This work has been recognized and awarded by several organizations, including the local community, which gave to Embratel the Fernando de Noronha ecology and preservation prize in the business category, " for the relevant services provided and for sponsoring nature preservation projects."

Environment Management Policy

The certificate was granted by Fundação Carlos Alberto Vanzolini and is in line with the Environment Management policy established by the company's administration: To provide Telecommunication services with the continuous improvement of the Environment Management System: Preventing the ecosystem pollution, fulfilling the legislation and the environment standards, thus helping preserve life.
