Competition is the name of the game

Embratel was getting ready for competition - all the way. For that purpose it developed the One Hundred Day-Plan that turned out to be the ultimate preparation of all departments to face the company's new strategic activities. The Company's goals then were team motivation, reduction of costs and pending activations, actions intended to meet Anatel's quality and service universalization goals, keeping and gaining new customers. Embratel was making arrangements for the provision of switched wireline telephone service.

The One Hundred-Day Plan included the distribution of prizes to service salespersons' outstanding perfomance and an advertising campaign to encourage the use of long distance telephone service. For that purpose, Embratel chose at first the three men representing the DDD service whose commercial was a huge success. The final media triumph came with the aadvertising campaigns with actress Ana Paula Arósio, a talented revelation among the new generation of Brazilian actors.

Internet via Embratel now available to customers
That year was also marked by the launch of the internet via Embratel. The company made 252 Mbps available to its customers, including the main access providers all over Brazil, for the interconnection with the world's computer network. By adopting cutting-edge ATM technology, Embratel interconnected the core of its internet backbone through 155 Mbps connections to the main routing centers like Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, Campinas, Curitiba, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre. It should be pointed out that Embratel has the only Latin Amereica's backbone with ATM infrastructure and high capacity (34 Mbps) international circuits. When you think about the internet, you think about Embratel's backbone.

Activation of Atlantis II
Activation, in 1999, of Atlantis II optical cable connecting South America (Fortaleza, in Brasil and Las Toninas, in Argentina) to Africa (Dakar, in Senegal, and Cape Verde) and Europe (Sesimbra, in Portugal, and Canary Islands, in Spain) extending over 7,500 miles with 60,000 voice circuits. In order to implement this system, Embratel entered into an international consortium made up of nine telecommunications companies investing US$ 300 million. Atlantis II is interconnected to the following systems: Americas I, Columbus II, Unisur, Sea-Me-We 3 (access to italy and to Southeastern Asia) and Tagide 2, forming a fiber optics ring over the Atlantic Ocean area.

Enhanced communication
The Company's logo puts the word Embratel under an elipse, illustrating an advance in time and space and highlighting the 21.

Social Concern
R$ 4,8 million were allocated to support two programs already implemented by the Ayrton Senna Institute: the Education for Life through Art Program, and the Education through Communication Program, benefiting 4,000 youths.
