| Embratel has constantly invested in the development and improvement of its employees. In 1997, for instance, 500 employees were trained in circuit activation and recovery processes, and 80% of all employees received some type of training program. By the way, at Embratel the employees come first. Its prime assets are made up of its human resources. |
New fiber optics systems
In 1997, the Belo Horizonte- Brasília (highway) and Florianópolis-Porto Alegre (OPGW) routes were implemented at 2,5 Gbps; the São Paulo-Curitiba-Florianópolis and the Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo-Belo Horizonte optical ring were expanded at 2,5 Gbps.
The long distance fiber optics program continued its expansion with the implementation of the Salvador-Fortaleza (OPGW), Brasília-Goiânia (highway), Porto Alegre-Uruguaiana-Passo de Los Libres (Argentina) (highway), Porto Alegre-Alegrete-Santana do Livramento-Rivera (Uruguay) (highway), Goiânia-Palmas-Estreito-Santa Inês (highway) routes at 2,5 Gbps, and with the 5 Gbps expansion of the Rio de Janeiro-Natal route, all of them now in their final stage of implementation.
Furthermore, Embratel started the implementation of 2,5 Gbps optical rings of Porto Alegre-Florianópolis-Porto Alegre, Florianópolis-Curitiba-Florianópolis, Curitiba-São Paulo-Curitiba, Goiânia-Uberlândia-Araguaí-Belo Horizonte, São Paulo-Goiânia-Brasília-Belo Horizonte-São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro-Salvador-Rio de Janeiro and Salvador-Natal-Salvador, as well as a new 10 Gbps submarine optical system interconnecting Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo through Santos.
DTN stands out as well
That year was marked by the following outstanding accomplishments: the implementation/expansion of CPA-T exchanges of the Domestic Telephone Network was carried on with 180 thousand additional junctors, through which the network became 100% digital, and 115 junctors were hired for the implementation/expansion of exchanges. Additionally, Embratel hired a computer network (advertisement platform) for the provision of value-added services (televoting) with 43 nodes spanning all over the country, and an anti-fraud system for data collection aimed at tracking the performance of the Wireless Cellular System.
The Domestic Data and Telematics Communication Network
The Domestic Data and Telematics Communication Network expanded the E-1 technology Digital Multi-Network service capacity through the installation of 4,500 circuits and the hiring of 6,000 additional circuits equivalent to 64 kbps. Furthermore, 13,000 High Performance Ports were added to the Domestic Packet Switching Data Communication Network - Renpac. The implementation of the Integrated Handling System (HIS) offering 27,00 new mail boxes, a new EDI Clearing Center service offered to 2,000 subscribers and the integration with proprietary mails should be stressed as well.
Always ahead on the internet
When you think internet, you think Embratel. The Company has expanded its network from four to 22 routing centers, staying ahead of the competition, as it usually is the case. It increased its customer service capacity as well through a transmission speed of up to 4 Mbps. The international communication grew from 29 Mbps to 76 Mbps, including connections with Argentina, Canada, United States and Uruguay through fiber optics submarine cables (18 channels of 2 Mbps) and satellite (one channel of 34 Mbps and three channels of 2 Mbps). Furthermore, the network internal channeling between centers mounted from 16 Mbps to 160 Mbps, now attending 7 thousand circuits equivalent to 64 kbps.
